Dr. Tai, Born on November 18, 1929 in China, came to the United States in 1956. He received his B.A. from the National Taiwan University in 1954, M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1958 and 1961 respectively. His doctoral thesis deals with the United Nations membership problems.
He served as instructor at the University of Montana (1961-62), assistant and later associate professor, University of Detroit (1962-68), research associate, the University of the Philippines (1969), visiting associate professor, National Taiwan University (1968-69), faculty research associate, Center for International Affairs, Harvard University (1966-67, 1968-69, 1973), director of Asian Studies Program, University of Detroit, (1972-89, chairman and professor, Department of Political Science, University of Detroit (1971-77), professor of international political economy, University of Detroit (1972-1994) and retired in 1974 with the status of professor of international political economy emeritus. Also in 1974, he taught as visiting professor international political economy, National Cheng-kung University, Taiwan and visiting professor of political science, University of Michigan - Dearborn.
A renowned scholar, Dr. Tai produced over seventy-five articles in professional journals and six books, including Land Reform and Politics: A Comparative Analysis (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1974), Politics of Post-Land Reform Countries (Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government Monograph, 1984), International Political Economy (Taipei: San Min Book Company, 1995), and United States, China, and Taiwan: Bridges for a New Millennium (Carbondale: Southern Illinois University, 1999). He also translated into English The Private Life of Chairman Mao, by Li Zhisui (New York: Random House, 1994). In his professional activities, he was president, American Society of China Scholars and editor-in-chief, American Journal of Chinese Studies (1966-98).
