Excerpt from The Chemical News, Vol. 4: And Journal of Physical Science: (With Which Is Incorporated the "Chemical Gazette"), A Journal of Practical Chemistry, in All Its Applications to Pharmacy, Arts, and Manufactures He who has seen the frescoes on the walls of Pompeii will bear witness to the high attainments of the painters of those ages. And, granting a great development to the art of painting in modern times, it would be difficult to say how far this is owing to our different mode of viewing the world, which has altogether changed the scope of artistic aspiration, or to the technical improvements, more especially in the colours, which are at present at the disposal of the painter. It is next to impossible to form a clear notion of the music of the ancients; but if we con sider the simplicity of the instruments at their command, there can be no doubt that the advance, which modern music has made, is mainly referable to our perfected con struction of their instruments, and to the invention of new instruments, for which again we are indebted to an active study of the laws of nature.
