The book represents a first in providing an extensive and unified treatment of the theory, design, and performance of a broad class of synchronization, tracking, and phase-coherent demodulation systems that employ the phase-lock principle. It is a voluminous book (695 pages) and necessarily contains much mathematical material. However, it has been written from an engineering point of view. Because of the unified and comprehensive treatment of the subject it will be an invaluable reference to workers in the fields of communication and control. The emphasis throughout the text is on the applications of the theory and should especially appeal to graduate engineering students. There are ample design examples and challenging exercises reflecting Prof. Lindsey’s long active involvement in this area; both in industry and in the university. Referencing is copious; reaching back to the seminal work of Huygens, Poincare, Rayleigh, and Einstein and ranging from pure mathematics to the biological sciences.
