This book describes a challenging new approach to language learnig and teaching. Derived from the authoritative Cobuild Project at the University of Birmingham, the lexical syllabus has been shaped by extensive evidencie of what is really important in today´s English. Cobuild research has established that the 700 most frequent words of English account for 70 per cent of all English text. the most frequent 1500 words account for around 76 per cent of text, and the most frequent 2500 words for 80 per cent. Based on this important information, the lexical syllabus offers an efficient and coherent learning opportunity, through real English. The autor examines existing methodological options and presents a task-based alternative, wher the learner is exposed to carefully selected natural language and uses language to achieve certain communicative goals. This is the meghodology of the pioneering Collins Cobuild English Course, written by Dave Willis and his wife, Jane. The lexical syllabus will appeal to language teachers everywhere, offering as it does new insights into today´s English.
