When I studied Egyptology at London University, I was fascinated by the language. As a teenager, I had often looked with wonder at the Egyptian hieroglyphic script and wished that I could understand its secrets. After studying ancient Egyptian for several years, another script began to interest me-the Chinese script. And so it was that I embarked on a lengthy study of the Chinese language. Having at last attained to a certain fluency in the Mandarin dialect, I conceived the idea of combining two of my greatest interests in one book, the Egyptian-Chinese Dictionary. After more than two years of research and compilation, I am happy to present this worker to the user. The dictionary contains most of the words that students are likely to encounter in reading Middle Egyptian texts. I have also included a simple grammatical overview and some practice questions at the end of the book. Until now, I have never seen another ancient Egyptian-Chinese Dictionary, so this could well be the first one ever written. Whether it is or not, there are surely many shortcomings in this book which will hopefully be rectified in any future editions.
